Early adversity forged Eagles’ success
PHILADELPHIA — Enemies clad in burgundy and gold bespeckled a buzzing sea of green at Lincoln Financial Field, here after schlepping up I-95 to support their unlikely Washington Commanders, the Eagles’ would-be saboteur whom nobody predicted to be in this spot when the season began. After suffering 18 years without a playoff win, Washington, with a brand new coaching staff and a strategic smattering of veterans signed to short-term deals, rode the right arm and the legs of wunderkind rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels all the way to the NFC Championship Game. But for a never-say-die team that spun six fourth-quarter comebacks this year, the magic finally ran out for the Commanders on Sunday with a 55-23 shellacking at the hands of the Birds, who get to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59 on Feb. 9.The Eagles, given their loaded roster and unfulfilled aspirations from a year ago, were expected to be here — despite Terry Bradshaw’s puzzling question to owner Jeffrey Lurie on the trophy podium.“How unexpected is this?” Bradshaw asked.Lurie: “Well, it’s kind of expected, I think.”It absolutely was, and in winning the conference crown and clinching a trip to the Super Bowl, the Eagles showed why. They were simply better. They were better than Washington at running. They were better than Washington at throwing and catching. They were better than Washington at defending. They rang up 229 yards on the ground, including bursts of 60 and 57 yards, and scored a modern postseason record of seven rushing touchdowns. Their 55 points were a conference title game record. And they never let the Comeback Commanders come back.In fact, the Eagles have been better than the rest of the NFC for the last four months, and they’ve won the conference for the third time in eight years, which is quite a standard to set. This is exactly what Lurie, general manager Howie Roseman and the Eagles expected when they talked about the “new standard” in 2017-18. Yet, despite those high expectations, the Birds’ journey to Super Bowl 59 didn’t start smoothly. With a pair of new assistants in offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, with quarterback Jalen Hurts needing to learn his fourth offense in five years as a pro, and with a slew of early injuries at key positions, the Eagles went 2-2 during a rocky September before their Week 5 bye.“This game is about overcoming adversity,” head coach Nick Sirianni said Sunday night. “There are going to be good plays in the game and there are going to be bad plays in the game. There will be good moments in a season and bad moments in a season.“It’s about overcoming and embracing the adversity, because really what we’ve talked about as a team is, like, adversity — we’ve all had to have adversity to be in this moment where we are right now, so adversity is what makes you who you are.“It’s been the story of the 2023 to the 2024 Eagles,” he added. “As bad of a feeling as we had about how last year ended, I think it makes you who you are. These guys are hungry, and we’ve got one more to go.”Through the first month of this season, after collapsing at the end of their previous campaign, the Birds were minus-4 in turnover differential. Now, they’re plus-21 (including plus-4 against Washington on Sunday). It helps that their defense is sixth in the league in takeaways. It also helps that Hurts, who had a 10-game turnover streak dating back to last season, takes better care of the ball now. Even if he doesn’t always put up gaudy passing numbers, he has dramatically cut down on interceptions and fumbles.“It’s a journey, and there’s no point where you will arrive in that journey,” said Hurts, who finished 20-of-28 for 246 yards and a touchdown against Washington, finding A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert a combined 17 times. He also scored three times on the ground.“I think for us and how we attack people, it’s just a matter of being on the same page with that, and going out there and playing clean football.”After the bye, the Eagles rattled off 10 straight victories and won 12 of their final 13 regular-season games (and 15 of their last 16 overall). They’re on a five-game roll. And in just four seasons, the tandem of Sirianni and Hurts has already doubled the one Super Bowl berth that Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb accomplished together. Now, with the biggest of expectations, the Eagles’ journey has them arriving in the Big Easy with one more game to play.——Follow Christiaan DeFranco on X at @the_defranc.
Eagles Notebook: A.J. Brown more engaged in win over Commanders, but won’t engage in hype
PHILADELPHIA — The locker room music sounded louder than at any point in the last two years. The chaos seemed more chaotic, the collective emotional release all the more splendidly spontaneous.Or did another Eagles NFC Championship Game victory just seem to feel that way?“No, this is very different,” receiver A.J. Brown said amid a Sunday night party after the Eagles’ 55-23 smackdown of the Washington Commanders. And yet, amid the exploding joy around him over a second Super Bowl spot in three years, which will be a Super rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs, accomplished NFL veteran Brown seemed to be quietly taking it all in stride. As it turns out, that is by design.“My emotions are intact,” Brown said. “Of course I’m excited for guys who haven’t been through it before. But I just want to win. Maybe I’ll let my emotions go when we do that.”For Brown, the only win is the successful completion of a “mission,” a Super Bowl victory as opposed to the painful 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57 two years ago.“I’m not saying I’m used to it,” Brown said, “but when you’ve been there before, you know what it’s like. You know what’s at stake and you know how to handle it. That’s the only thing I’m focused on, doing things differently, trying to do everything in my power to keep us winning.”Brown has been considered a premier wide receiver for a long time, a three-time Pro Bowler who after being traded to the Eagles at the 2022 NFL Draft, signed a four-year, $100 million contract. He’s loomed large for quarterback Jalen Hurts in the Eagles’ offense, though like everyone else fell in line production wise as newly signed running back Saquon Barkley had an astounding first season with the club. But in the postseason, Brown’s been extra quiet. He managed only one catch for 10 yards in a 22-10 wild card victory over the Green Bay Packers. Then in the divisional round, Brown was targeted seven times, but had only two receptions for 14 yards in a 28-22 win over the L.A. Rams.Brown finally broke out Sunday in this conference championship, catching six balls for 96 yards and a touchdown. All along, there have been no self-recriminations or outward complaints about his lack of production. Instead, Brown says he’s remained focused on “The Mission.” … That would be, to not only get back to the Super Bowl, but win it this time.“At this point, the objective is to win,” Brown said. “I know I haven’t had the best playoff numbers, stats-wise, but we’ve been right on the ball. We’ve been doing it all year.“The Mission, we’re still trying to finish it. It’s not all over.”While talking about maintaining his focus on the ultimate prize, Brown looked up at the cacophony of celebration breaking out across the room Sunday. At this moment, he wasn’t taking part in it. He doesn’t plan to do so any time over the next two weeks leading up to that Super Sunday, either.Brown says his plan is about, ‘Removing the feelings, removing the excitement, removing all those things, because it doesn’t do anything for you.“Last time, I honestly felt like a paid actor during the whole week,” he said of the Super Bowl hype. “Just everything; some of the interviews … the only time it started to feel like real football was the game. So you can remove all those things and just try to focus on the game, and that’s the only thing that matters. Just trying to win. Everything else is for everybody else.”In that Super Bowl after his first Eagles season, Brown fared quite well. His numbers were identical to this conference title game win over the Commanders. Brown had six catches for 96 yards and a touchdown that day nearly two years ago.But he points out it’s not the time of year to focus on numbers, nor is it the time for him to spend too much time talking about it.“It’s just something you have to do,” he said about the distractions leading up to the Feb. 9 game in New Orleans. “It’s not important. It’s important for everybody else to have to see you, and listen to what you have to say, but none of that matters. You just try to come out victorious.”• • •Eagles center Cam Jurgens had what he acknowledged as “a long week … and a long season.”Jurgens was referring at least partially to the apparent back injury which kept him out until a Friday practice, and kept his status uncertain until game time.“We had to get through,” Jurgens said after joining with is offensive linemates for another excellent game, playing a part in Saquon Barkley’s 118 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. “I feel a lot of joy right now.”He probably also felt a bit of pain, though Jurgens tried yard to shrug it off. As for his status going forward, Jurgens left no doubt, saying “I’ll be ready to go. … I’ll be great.“I’m just so thankful to be here in this city, to have been drafted by this team, I couldn’t be in a better spot,” Jurgens said. “I couldn’t have been brought into a better situation, learning from this O-line. … This team has so much fight, so much grit. Nobody blinks. They just go out there and fight.”• • •The Eagles were leading 34-23 early in the fourth quarter and were knocking on the door again at the Washington 1 when linebacker Frankie Luvu thought he would do everything in his power to keep the Eagles from scoring again. So with the Eagles lined up in a tush-push formation, Luvu tried to get the jump on Jalen Hurts, but he was called for encroachment … twice in a row.The officials ruled that one more jump by Luvu would take him out of the game. So as the Eagles lined up again, now within inches of the goal line, encroachment was called again, this time Jonathan Allen committing the infraction. He had already been offsides at the start of this mess, right before Luvu jumped twice.Ref Shawn Hochuli had seen enough, announcing loudly that one more time and the officials would literally gift the Eagles with the six points. Hurts then made it all academic by pushing into the end zone on the next snap.“Simply put, a team can’t commit multiple fouls in an effort to prevent the score,” Hochuli said. “(Luvu) jumped the ball a couple of times. That was when the the warning came in. Again, if it’s meant to prevent a score, we can essentially award the score.”
Eagles dominate Commanders, setting up Super Bowl rematch vs. Chiefs
PHILADELPHIA — Saquon Barkley consulted with his family before the star running back decided — yes, it was time to leave his only professional home with the Giants and sign with the Eagles. His youngest daughter, Jada, had one question for dad as he told her the family was headed to Philadelphia.Does this mean dad will win now?As Barkley lay on a football field littered with confetti and cradled his daughter against his chest, the answer was undeniable: You bet Barkley and the Eagles are going to win now — with a chance at the biggest one of the season still ahead with a date in the Super Bowl.Barkley dashed 60 yards for a touchdown on Philadelphia’s first play and finished with 118 yards and three scores, Jalen Hurts rushed for three TDs and the Eagles soared into the Super Bowl with a 55-23 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday.Hurts and the Eagles are in the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons, and this time Barkley is along for the ride. They will play former Eagles coach Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons.“I came to Philly to be part of games like this,” Barkley said. “And there’s nothing better than a game where you can advance to the Super Bowl.”The 55 points are the most any team has scored in a conference championship game since the 1970 merger.Hurts, wearing a brace on his left knee, also threw for 246 yards and a touchdown pass and the Eagles had a towel-waving crowd in a frenzy for the NFC championship game at Lincoln Financial Field.“I don’t want anybody else leading this team at quarterback other than him. He’s a winner,” coach Nick Sirianni said. “Again, he deals with so much criticism which just blows my mind because of the questions I have to answer. I don’t look too much into that. The questions I have to answer it’s just like, man, this guy wins. He’s won his entire life.”A.J. Brown caught six passes for 96 yards and a touchdown — and faked tossing the NFC championship trophy off a platform — and an Eagles team at just 2-2 headed into the bye week scored a season high in points to usher the franchise into their fifth Super Bowl. The Commanders played a role in getting the NFC title game to Philly with two straight road wins — including last week’s stunner at No. 1 seed Detroit that set the stage for the second-seeded Eagles to host.Jayden Daniels threw for 255 yards with one touchdown, one interception and fell short in his bid to become the first rookie quarterback to lead his team to the Super Bowl. The Commanders were doomed by four turnovers, including a lost fumble by Austin Ekeler in the third quarter and the Commanders down 34-23.“We believed that we belonged here,” Daniels said. “It was just another game for me. That’s how I treated it.”The Eagles won their only Super Bowl in the 2017 season and Nick Foles, the QB in that game against New England, was the honorary captain. The Eagles cut to other stars from that game in attendance on the big screen and now — two years after Eagles lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl — the franchise has a chance at winning their second one.Much as he has all season, Barkley led the way for the Eagles. After the Commanders opened the game with an 18-play drive and a field goal that quieted a raucous crowd, Barkley whipped the fans that included actor Bradley Cooper into a frenzy on the Eagles’ first offensive play from scrimmage.Only the ninth running back to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, Barkley took the pitch from Hurts and cut left, spun around a pair of defenders and took off on the touchdown run.The Eagles recovered a fumble on the next drive and Barkley added a 4-yard run — making him 2 for 2 on carries and touchdowns — for a 14-3 lead.Including the playoffs, Barkley extended an NFL record Sunday with his seventh rushing touchdown of 60-plus yards in a season.“When he does it early, it doesn’t really matter who gets the party started, just for us to gain some momentum as an offense and gain a rhythm, (we) keep going,” Hurts said.Daniels, who led the Commanders to six consecutive victories, made his share of big plays that included a 36-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin that pulled them to 14-12.“I had a lot of confidence in what we would do and how we would play,” Commanders coach Dan Quinn said.Hurts, who hurt his knee when he was sacked last week by the Rams, had his best game yet in a postseason where the Eagles played all three games at home. He closed the first half with a tush push 1-yard touchdown and threw a 4-yard scoring pass to Brown to send the Eagles into halftime with a 27-15 lead.“I guess he let me out of my straitjacket a little bit today,” Hurts said of Sirianni’s offense.Hurts secured the Super Bowl berth with a tush push touchdown in the fourth quarter — after a humorous moment when an official said he’d award the Eagles a touchdown if Washington didn’t stop jumping offside — and his ninth career postseason rushing score gave them a 41-23 lead.Small amounts of green confetti started to fly from the upper deck at that point at the countdown was officially on for the Super Bowl. The Commanders’ desperate gasp at another late comeback win ended with a thud when Nolan Smith sacked Daniels on fourth down in the fourth quarter. Will Shipley gave Barkley a needed breather in the blowout and punched in a 2-yard touchdown run for a 55-23 lead. The “E-A-G-L-E-S! Eagles!” chants began in earnest and it’s sure to ring loud in New Orleans.InjuriesEagles: Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens was active but did not start because of a back injury. Landon Dickerson moved from left guard to center and Tyler Steen started at left guard. … Dickerson suffered a knee injury. … RB Kenneth Gainwell was evaluated for a concussion suffered in the third quarter.Up nextThe Eagles head to New Orleans for a Feb. 9 matchup against the AFC champion.
